Boosting the Bright Side

Looking at the World Through Rose Colored Glasses

CHRIS:

Michelle has the great responsibility of helping me to see the bright side of things.  While I sometimes get frustrated with her eternally rose-colored glasses, I also know that my negative outlook can use some pinkish tint every now and then.  Here’s some things we have done to boost my ability to see the bright side.

First, we adopted a team mentality.

While on vacation, we will inevitability see someone with an Oklahoma Sooners shirt on.  Once spotted, Michelle or I will yell, “BOOMER”, to which, a true fan will respond, “SOONER”.  In that same vein, we refer to ourselves as Team Seaman.  When we adopted this team mentality, we began acting like a team.  We know we have each other’s backs.

MICHELLE:

Second, we balance work and home.

The problem with thinking I can have a work-life balance is that it suggests some amount of equality.  My job will never be as important as my family, but I sometimes have to sacrifice Team Seaman because my job also matters.  We have found that it is important to recognize when these occasions occur and make plans to counteract its impact.  When an emergency at work kept me far later than expected and destroyed our dinner plans, Chris showed up unexpectedly saying, “Looks like a perfect night for an office picnic!”

CHRIS:

Third, we add a dash of fun.

Without routine, my world would collapse into chaos. That said, I also know that too much routine can suck the excitement out of life. Engaging in fun activities with our spouse is linked to a better overall sense of wellbeing.  Sending random texts when we are apart or looking for and trying new recipes or restaurants are just two of the ways we add fun, without throwing my world into turmoil.   While routine may save your sanity, fun can add sparks.

MICHELLE:

Fourth, we celebrate, just because we can.

Well-known holidays are easy to celebrate because they give a special nod to things like gratitude, love, parents, etc. Why stop there?   Embrace the minor, made-up, ridiculous and random holidays too. They offer opportunities to recognize and appreciate the simple and silly things.  Chris’ personal favorite, National Donut Day.  While we pride ourselves on eating healthy, all bets are off on this special day! While people may find random holidays frivolous it’s nice to know that adding a little hint of happiness doesn’t take much time or effort.

CHRIS:

Fifth, we acknowledge the good stuff.

Have you ever noticed that we are more present for our spouse during a time of struggle?  What if we offered the same level of enthusiasm when things are going great?  I experience validation when Michelle acknowledges me.  While I may be pumped about a great golf game I played, having Michelle share in my excitement by asking questions, listening intently and recognizing my achievement, drives my success on the course even deeper.

Come on, the world’s so bright!  You gotta wear shades!
